The Postabortive and Postpartal Septicemia


Abstract
The problem of postabortive and postpartal septicemia has received increasing at tension. The septic abortion became one of the leading causes of the maternal death as well as puerperal infection.
The pathogenesis and principal treatment, however, have not been clarified. The septicemia following termination of pregnancy was evaluated clinically with twelve cases who were treated in Severance Hospital during last five years.
1. The most common causes of infection were bougination and improper D. & E. in midtrimester of the pregnancy.
2. The septicemia developed earlier in postpartum than in post abortive status.
3. The septic pneumonitis was the most common lesion to extension of the infection beyond the pelvis.
4. The pathogenesis and the treatment of the septicemia following termination of the pregnancy were discussed.
